Nabalu

Kinabalu...for the past 3 months i have had some friend or other taking the Mount Kinabalu challenge. One has successfully reached the summit and back, another got only as far as Laban Rata due to bad weather and one other...should be contemplating the reason for just being there...there's no food up there.

Nabalu as the locals call her means Spirit Mountain in Dusun i believe. They believe that when the elderly passed on, their spirit is called to the mountain for their final resting place. We the uninitiated know it as the tallest mountain in South East Asia. More of us in Semenanjung call it Mount KK which normally gets the most patient Sabahan into a fit. "It's Mount Kinabalu!" they will TELL you with a parting buduh at the end of it...at least that's what i got from my sumandak.

The first time i saw the mountain close up was when i was staying in Sutra Harbour in March 2003. I could only see a silhoutte of the peak from the main entrance of Sutra Harbour. I manage a quick glimpse when the clouds parted and i was hooked. It seemed like the mountain was calling to me. March 2004 i was standing in Kinabalu Park breathing the Great Mountains breath. Our team, pictured above, took the Mesilau route. We loved this trip and we have pledged to come back.

Nabalu...sia dingar panggilan ko.

The view of and from the mountain have a special effect. Until now i still can recalled the spectacular view and the special feel i had, when i was in "Huangshan mountain" Shanghai a couple of years back.

They really ran out of ideas to name the dead town huh? Just get rid of ki, and you get nabalu.
